Young British designer Charlie May has just released her second collection and we were lucky enough to be featured in the lookbook!
Charlie May has just arrived on the scene, completing her debut collection this Spring, and her signature minimalist style and androgynous look is generating quite the buzz. She has quickly risen in the ranks of the fashion world, entering into the industry before she even finished her degree -- she studied Fashion Design at the University of West England where she not only achieved superlative marks (she graduated with honors) but also started up a blog, Girl a la Mode, and worked on Louise Goldin's Spring//Summer 2010 collection. Her blog has become one of the top fashion blogs in the UK and is frequently featured in magazines like Elle, Company, Grazia Italia and the like. After graduation she picked up and moved to the big city. Once settled in London she spent two seasons working for Thomas Tait until creativity took over and she began her own line.
Her clothing is gorgeous. Simple, elegant, extraordinarily chic. She expertly mixes hard and soft -- crisp cotton and light silk, tough leather and luxurious suede. Her androgynous looks are strong yet subtle, featuring feminine elements to create the perfect balance. Her AW12 collection is filled with rich jewel tones -- like a ruby floor length collared dress and a sapphire blazer and skirt set -- and features the oxblood hue that seems to be taking over the runways. All of the pieces are entirely monochromatic, the perfect collection of inspired basics, and include recurring detailing of buckles, ties, unexpected slits and leather panels. The menswear inspired cuts showcase her tailoring ability while feminine detailing shows skin in a way that creates an alluring, nontraditional sexuality.
We were so excited to be involved with this lookbook. Not only is Charlie May a fantastic at what she does, but we also love having the opportunity to work with young designers. There is a heightened energy and buzzing vitality that comes with young designers -- which maybe comes from all the sleep deprivation, lord knows we've been known to live on that second wind -- and it's so much fun to get involved with like-minded people who are just as excited as we are about our work! And did we mention it was shot by our favorite lady Saga Sig? The lookbook and accompanying video showcase our Spring style Ori in both black and dirty white. You can view a slideshow of the collection below along with the video and some behind the scenes shots from the video shoot at East London's Asylum!
